RULES & CONDUCT - CODE OF CONDUCT

I. Hierarchy and Progression

  • 1. Start as a white belt, regardless of previous martial arts experience.
  • 2. Address instructors by their appropriate titles (Coach, Professor, Master, Grand-Master).
  • 3. Higher belts may invite lower belts for practice, not vice versa.
  • 4. Stripes up to purple belt must be allocated by MBJJF-recognized Brown or Black Belts.
  • 5. Always respect the chain of command in training decisions.

II. Respect and Mat Conduct

  • 6. Pay respect when entering or leaving the mat.
  • 7. Maintain discipline on and off the mat.
  • 8. Avoid disturbing training sessions by talking or disrupting.
  • 9. Obtain permission to leave during a session.
  • 10. Follow traditional rules of good conduct sincerely.

III. Hygiene and Appearance

  • 11. Wear clean and washed training attire (rashguards, shorts, kimonos, etc.).
  • 12. Keep nails trimmed to avoid injuries to partners.
  • 13. Maintain good personal hygiene (shower, brush teeth before class).
  • 14. Tie long hair properly; short hair should be well-maintained.
  • 15. Remove jewellery and accessories to prevent harm to partners.

IV. Training Etiquette

  • 16. Act humbly and ask respectfully in front of instructors.
  • 17. Bow to your partner before and after training.
  • 18. Keep phones silent during class.
  • 19. Be punctual for training and activities.
  • 20. Ask for permission to join if late to class.

V. Ethical Behaviour and Harmony

  • 21. Foster mutual respect between students and instructors.
  • 22. Contribute to a positive atmosphere of harmony and respect.
  • 23. Show respect for instructors, the mat, training attire, and partners.
  • 24. Avoid disputes among students.
  • 25. Respect all individuals regardless of gender, age, or background.

VI. Prohibited Behaviour and Safety

  • 26. Do not use inappropriate language or loud voices in the dojo.
  • 27. Avoid bringing cigarettes, alcohol, illicit substances, or dangerous drugs to the dojo.
  • 28. Report any injury or disability to the instructor before training.
  • 29. Avoid training if suffering from contagious diseases.
  • 30. Wear proper attire, such as a Gi, T-shirt, or singlet, when in the dojo.

VII. Financial and Administrative Conduct

  • 31. Pay monthly and entrance fees per club rules.
  • 32. Report unresolved conflicts to higher instructors or the MBJJF office in writing.
  • 33. Uphold honesty, sincerity, and integrity as part of BJJ.
  • 34. The dojo does not tolerate racism, communalism, or discrimination.
  • 35. Always respect the public, regardless of age, gender, or religion.
