Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu found its home in Mauritius in 2005, thanks to the vision and relentless dedication of Professor Muhamad Tawfiq Jaunbocus, a passionate Jiu-Jitsu practitioner and founder of the Mauritius Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation. With a dream to bring this transformative martial art to life, he began in Medine, Camp de Masque, a modest village in the east of the island, planting the seeds of a movement that would soon spread across the island. Through his tireless efforts in organizing and championing BJJ events, Professor Jaunbocus not only introduced a sport but ignited a passion that continues to thrive both academically and competitively throughout Mauritius and Rodrigues. Today, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu clubs are established in nearly every region of Mauritius, in alignment with the country’s Sports Act. In 2008, the Mauritius Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation was founded as a non-profit organisation, thanks to the support and dedication of its managing committee. Over the years, the Federation has grown steadily, welcoming new members and expanding its reach, fostering a vibrant and thriving community of practitioners across the island.
Under the leadership of Mr. Farook Pirbacosse, who served as President (2008-2010/2010-2014), Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu achieved a significant milestone. On 08 July 2014, the sport was officially recognised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, marking a new chapter in its growth and development in Mauritius. On 07 October 2015, the Mauritius Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (MBJJF) proudly received official approval to represent the nation, granted by the Prime Minister’s Office through the efforts of Mrs. Mohsena Olath-Carramtally, the Federation’s Secretary. In 2015, the Federation established its Academy, further solidifying its commitment to the sport, and became affiliated with the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation in 2012. Since 2016, the Federation has sought recognition from the Sport Jiu-Jitsu International Federation (SJJIF) and the Sport Jiu-Jitsu African Federation (SJJAF). Today, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu stands as the fastest-growing sport among all martial arts and combat disciplines in Mauritius. But Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is more than just a sport; it is a way of life. This art demands dedication, time, and teamwork, while offering profound physical and mental benefits to practitioners of all ages. The Federation warmly invites you to join us on this transformative and enriching journey!
